Morena Mori is a Human Rights expert with many years of international experience working in countries such as Guatemala, Lebanon, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Timor-Leste, Colombia and South Sudan. She started to work on human rights related issues in 1992 in Guatemala. From 1997 to 1999, Morena worked for the Guatemalan Truth Commission, mandated to investigate and report on human rights violations and abuses that occurred from the beginning of the internal armed conflict and perpetrated by both sides to the signing of the Agreement on a Firm and Lasting Peace in 1996. From 2008 to 2010, she worked in Afghanistan with UNAMA (the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan) in charge of promoting transitional justice. As part of her achievements in the country, Morena supported the establishment of a travelling theater group directed by Hjalmar Joffre-Eichhorn along with Afghanistan Human Rights and Democracy Organization (AHRDO), to use Theater for the Oppressed as a powerful healing and storytelling platform for transitional justice to revitalize the discussion on human rights violations that occurred in the past, always encouraging a profound dialogue between different groups in society. After witnessing the success and importance of the theater in healing the victims, Morena was inspired to contribute to produce “Healing Tears”, a documentary film portraying the experience of theater for healing and justice. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Shoresh Kalantari, the film premiered to the Afghan audience at the first Edition of “Afghanistan Human Rights Film Festival” in Kabul in 2011. Morena holds a MA degree in political science and in conflict resolution and a PhD in Human rights international law. She is currently on assignment in Juba where she leads the monitoring and verification of conflict related to sexual violence.
