
Suki Nagra has worked for the advancement of human rights for over 15 years in Asia and the Middle East. Currently, she is serving Chief of Child Protection with UNICEF in Syria. She also recently led a United Nations Human Rights Council mandated investigation into human rights violations in Iraq by ISIL. Previously, Suki worked in Afghanistan with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and UNAMA, advocating for women’s rights, peace and reconciliation, and child protection. She was captivated by the beauty of the country and the spirit and resilience of its people and her initial plan to stay for a year was extended to six! Suki has also worked in Burma, and as an adviser to a Government Minister in Sri Lanka on issues related to peacebuilding, human rights and humanitarian responses. During her five years with Amnesty International she focused on the human rights situation in East Asia, including in the DPRK.Her passion for film and literature is linked to her conviction that art is a powerful medium for change. Speaking on behalf of the United Nations at the second International Afghanistan Human Rights Film Festival-2nd Edition (2013) she stressed that “the power of film to spark debate, provoke discussion and raise awareness can never be underestimated.”
